Study of calculating water consumption for agricultural irrigation purposes from all water sources used in Saudi Arabia

This project is being conducted by Applied Research Center for Metrology, Standards, and Testing (ARCMST), Research Institute at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM-RI), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

The preservation of the quantity and quality of water resources is of paramount importance worldwide and particularly in arid and semi-arid areas like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This project mainly aims to quantify the water consumption in the Kingdom for agricultural use, including all water sources. The new study will adopt the results, outputs, and data of Qias-I study conducted by Ministry of Environment and Agriculture (MEWA), with the expansion of the geographical coverage to include all the agricultural areas in the Kingdom, as well as the inclusion of all water sources used for irrigation, such as surface water, and renewed water (treated sewage and agricultural drainage, and desalination).

The output of this study will be a comprehensive IT infrastructure and a database linked with a dashboard to include periodically updated interactive maps for visualization of

Crop areas,
Crop types,
Crop health,
Irrigation activities and management,
Historic and future trend analysis,
Report generation,
Data, and
Models utilized.

This will provide a single platform for all the activities related to irrigation in Saudi Arabia. In addition, a comprehensive training program will be designed and delivered to the SIO cadres, where KFUPM will provide the program specific certifications to the candidates.
